With the eventual success of his plays, Dumas became a figure of fashion and popularity in Paris, bringing him into contact with the nobility, celebrated musicians and the early parapsychologists. Through the latter he became acquainted with work surrounding the legendary Abbe Faria: a mystic and proto-hypnotist who had allegedly been imprisoned in the Chateau d’If.
