"In the winter of 2014/15 the Royal College of Art was under a special security threat. We noticed it happening: the security guards around Kensington Gore had been instructed to be more aggressive. Getting in and out of the college was being further policed. When lines are being drawn, boundaries becoming more solid, calls have to be made in order to determine who looks like an RCA student and who doesn’t. In March the maintenance staff demonstrated outside the campus in Kensington, for the right to the London living wage. ‘We are not the dirt we clean’, they argued. Posters around the college advertising the demonstration had been taken down and entrances had been chained shut to avoid potential occupation of the buildings. There is a fear of contagion in the air at the RCA, a frantic exertion of control. Some people shouldn’t be here, certain things shouldn’t spread, the walls shouldn’t be so permeable."
