Secret Admirer - III

5.00

‘Secret Admirer III’ - being the third tranche of Nick Ainsworth’s home-recorded oeuvre, and perhaps the finest and mellowest yet. The last couple of years have seen Nick at the helm of a few different vessels: sometimes quiet and nylon strung, sometimes amped and rocking, always great and often exploring the same material with different bands. This forthcoming tape represents the original manuscript from whence these explorations have jumped off.

Like on ‘I’ and ‘II’ the songs are short and sweet, but here maybe even more consistently able to bowl a listener over with irresistible hooks and clear-eyed purpose. They introduce themselves in a warm and friendly manner, give up their goodness and *puff* it’s on to the next. There is a large number of songs but it makes a most satisfying whole; there are forays into previously uncharted Secret Admirer sub-genres (maybe sub-sub-genres) but all tied together by the unmistakeable singing and playing that is Nick’s. The sequencing being alphabetical (40 songs so fair enough) it gets my nomination for the only album it’s okay to listen to on shuffle.

The song included here, ‘Better Yet’, is a favourite. I get that oh-so elusive movement-in-stasis feeling from the drifting harmonies - guitar adds spookily neat punctuation and listener is caught between wonderful warp and woof of the song and the singing. As far as I’m concerned that’s the best there is, if songs are your bag. It employs a magnificent set of ears as well as lungs and is a good taste of what this album delivers by the ton. These songs ask for very little and give back a heck of a lot. Let ‘em in!
