'The work in this book was photographed over two trips to Japan, the first in 2011 and the second in May of 2013. The book is largely a response to my own pre-conceived expectations about Japan. In Shinto, Torii are used to mark the border between the sacred and the secular. They serve that purpose here as well, but they also signify the boundaries between the imagined and the real.'
