"I was sitting in the front yard under the

     maple tree.

Father came by and said, We'll cut it down

     sometime.

It gives so much shade the house is damp.

I remembered the wonder of its red falls,

The delicate lightness of beginning greens,

The cooling of the dense dark greens

On stifling summer days.

How comforting always standing there beside

     the walk

As I came home in the dark.

I had grown to have affection for it.

Could I make my father understand.

I thought I could not.

Just then a winged seed pod fluttered down

Into my cupped hang.

See, I exclaimed, showing it to my father,

A winged gift!"
